You may think of yourself first as a partner, relative or friend. The support you give still matters, and your own needs deserve attention too.

The NHS recommends telling your GP that you are a carer and finding out about a carer's assessment. An assessment can help identify support such as breaks, practical help or contact with local groups.

Start with one conversation

You might ask a friend or relative for a specific piece of help, or speak with a carers' group about what is available locally. If you are struggling to cope, speak with your GP rather than feeling you have to manage alone.

The NHS guide to looking after someone with dementia links to information about assessments, breaks and organisations offering support. Use it as a starting point for finding help that fits your circumstances.

What helped you take the first step towards asking for support? Share only what you feel comfortable making public.
